What I like best about working at the Zoo: Being inspired by working with such passionate and dedicated staff. The wonderful opportunities to interact with a vast range of amazing animals and contribute to achieving positive conservation outcomes in the wild.

Richard Jakob-Hoff

Role: Senior Veterinarian (Conservation and Research)
Started: 2006
Qualifications: BSc (Hons); BVMS (Hons); MACVSc (Wildlife Medicine); Internship in Avian Medicine & Surgery, Murdoch, Perth, Australia.
Special Interests: Conservation Medicine, veterinary care and management of wildlife; wildlife health research; disease risk assessment
What I like best about working at the Zoo: Working with great people and wonderful animals, and being able to make a contribution to nature conservation and a sustainable future.

John Potter

Role: Senior Veterinarian (Clinical Services)
Started: 1988 – fulltime since 2003
Qualifications: BVSC (Massey University, NZ); MACVSc (Zoo Medicine)
Special Interests: Health promotion – such as improving diets and disease monitoring in the Zoo’s animals, so we don’t have to intervene too often to aid a sick animal
What I like best about working at the Zoo: Lovely group of animals to work on, and a good Zoo team to work with.


Bethany Jackson

Role:Resident Veterinarian
Started: 2010
Qualifications: BVSC (hons)
Special Interests: Conservation medicine, epidemiology, disease in wild populations, avian/reptile medicine
What I like best about working at the Zoo: The genuine enthusiasm shown by all members of staff for the zoo collection; as well as a broader focus that includes conservation issues for wild populations, and educating the public on these issues.  Also the exposure to some incredible New Zealand endemics/natives. And of course, the lovely NZCCM group!


Maureen Forsyth

Role: Consultant Veterinarian
Started: 1999
Qualifications: DVN, Saskatchewan, Canada; MRCVS, MACVS (Veterinary Pharmacology) 
Special Interests: Avian medicine
What I like best about working at the Zoo: Working with such dedicated, passionate and caring people. The awesome experience of being up very close to both exotic and native species.

Berend Westera

Role: Consultant Veterinarian
Qualifications: BVSc, Queensland, Australia
Special Interests: Fish, reptiles, primates, large cats, but most experience in avian medicine and surgery. Love doing surgery and find the challenge of different species and conditions exciting.
What I like best about working at the Zoo: I like working with non-domesticated animals and am ever in awe of wild species. I get a great joy out of working with the keepers and staff, diagnosing and improving any creature’s health and wellbeing.
 

Melanie Farrant

Role: Veterinary Nurse

Qualifications: RCVS (Veterinary Nursing); Certificate in Nursing Exotic Species, City and Guilds, UK
Special Interests: Working with birds and mammals
What I like best about working at the Zoo: I really enjoy the work here at the zoo, as there is such a wide variety of species to work with and a great team committed to animal health and welfare.
 

Lauren Best

Role: Veterinary Nurse
Started: 2003-2008 (Auckland Zoo). 2008-2011 (Australia Zoo). Returned to Auckland Zoo 2011.
Qualifications: BAppAn Tech (Veterinary Nursing)
Special Interests: Travelling, seeing the world along with its amazing creatures, making the most of this cold winter to take on the challenge of snowboarding, wildlife, fieldwork, conservation in-situ and ex-situ.
What I like best about working at the Zoo: Working with all the wonderous exotic animals of our world, as well as all our astonishing New Zealand natives.  I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to work closely with such amazing creatures.

Fiona Hastie

Special Interests: Anaesthesia, Radiography & Practice Management
What I like best about working at the Zoo: Working with native species, variety, challenge, learning & the great people.



Bianca Kuhlmann

Role: Veterinary Nurse – Casual
Started: 2007
Qualifications: Diploma Vet Nurse (Nov 2010)
Special Interests: Nursing care of birds and small exotics, especially anaesthetics & behavioural enrichment
What I like best about working at the Zoo: Being able to care for protected native species and exotics beyond the pet species I deal with on a day to day basis.


Joanna Crawford

Role: Veterinary Nurse
Started: 2009
Qualifications: BAppAnTech (Applied Animal Technology), Diploma in Veterinary Nursing
Special Interests: Native wildlife rehabilitation
What I like best about working at the Zoo: Being involved in the veterinary care of such a diverse range of species, the constant learning opportunities, and working with such a large, positive group of like-minded people.


Chelsea Dillon

Role: Veterinary Nurse – Casual
Started: 2007
Qualifications: Diploma of Animal Health Technology, Diploma of Science 
Special Interests: I have a special interest in birds, particularly parrots. I'm also interested in behaviour and training (I'm a member of the International Association of Avian Trainers and Educators and I teach puppy training classes through my full-time position at Vets for Pets)
What I like best about working at the Zoo: I love being able to work with and learn about so many different species. I feel lucky to be a part of such a wonderful group of people at the Zoo who love and care about animals as much as I do.
