New Zealand Fur Seal
A young male fur seal was brought to the NZCCM by the Department of Conservation. It had been run over by a train in the Otahuhu marshalling yards, and had quite a severe injury to its right rear flipper.
The seal, which was otherwise in really good condition, was anaesthetised and his exposed and damaged bones were amputated and the wound was sutured together, leaving the right flipper much smaller than the left one. However, immersion in the NZCCM pool showed it could still swim well, and after a few days in the hospital ward, he was released at the Manukau heads. When last seen he was swimming strongly towards a seal haul-out site down harbour from the release site.
