Caroline Lees
Conservation Breeding Specialists Group (CBSG) Australasia
CBSG’s mission is to increase the effectiveness of species conservation efforts through: innovative, interdisciplinary methodologies; culturally sensitive facilitation; and empowering global partnerships and collaborations. As CBSG Australasia’s Co-convenor part of my role is to help build greater awareness within the region of what CBSG can offer, and the local capacity to deliver it.
My background is in the design and management of zoo-based programmes for threatened species. The science that underpins this readily transfers to the management of small semi-wild and wild populations – something of potentially broad application in Australasia - and this is an area I am busy pursuing for the branch. Species I’ve been working on include Tasmanian devils, and mala – both fascinating conservation stories. In addition, given the high cost and carbon involved in travelling both within and outside the region, I’m working with other branch members to explore the use of virtual environments as an alternative to face-to-face workshops. Our initial trials have shown great promise and I’m looking forward to the next phase of development!
